Quality Photography Competition

Another year is over for the ‘What’s Your Angle?’ photography competition and exhibition, which showcased a significant number of entrants and winners under the age of 18. It also featured a mother-son duo among the prize winners and the judges noted an overall improvement in the quality of images submitted compared to the previous year.
A standout aspect of this year’s competition, was the success of three under 18 entrants, who collectively earnt four prizes in the main section of judging. Imogen Mead, Mitch Kay and Cooper Skraha impressed competition judges George Stewart and Gary Louth even before their images were highlighted as contenders in the Under 18 section.
Imogen earnt a second and third place in the Animals and Open categories, and also claimed first and third place in the Under 18 section. Mitch and Cooper secured third places in the Landscapes and Boyup Brook categories, with Mitch also achieving second in the Under 18 section.
This year introduced a new Open category, which had no restrictions, a change inspired by feedback from last year's entrants. This category became the most popular, featuring 27 entries showcasing a variety of scenes, techniques, and colors.
It was another impressive year for Anne Lasini of Kendenup who was awarded six places including the Most Outstanding Print for her work ‘Foggy Morning’, a bush scene captured in morning light. The judges remarked that the image “would be a welcome addition to anyone’s lounge room wall.”
Local talent was especially highlighted in the Boyup Brook category, where mother-son duo Kirsten and Cooper Skraha received first and third places for their differing farm scenes. Don Railton also secured one of three of his second places with a photo taken at the most recent Country Music Festival.
This year, photographers found inspiration in sunrises, sunsets, vibrant pink flowers and an array of animals, making for a stunning exhibition of beauty for all who attended.
Guests were invited to put a vote in for their one favourite image. A tiny creature perched on finger tips, entitled ‘Angry Bird’, by Bridgetown photographer Sid Whiting, went on to win the most hearts and as a result the People’s Choice Award.
In it’s seventh year in 2024, CRC Projects Officer Sharon Lampard attributes the success of this event to the support it receives from entrants and from local sponsorship. The CRC sincerely thanks the Boyup Brook Co-op, Hampton Partners, CM Dalton Transport, Blackwood Plant Hire, Boyup Brook Lions Club, and the Shire of Boyup Brook.
Looking ahead to 2025, the competition will likely change its date to the middle of the year. All updates and information will be published in the Gazette, shared with previous entrants, and posted on the CRC’s social media pages and website.
